A few days ago, I upgraded my studio monitors (in recording, that means "speakers"). I bought a pair of JBL 4326's. This was such a HUGE improvement from what I was using. I noticed two things right away- Radiohead sounded better than ever, and my mixes sounded worse than ever. Despite how that sounds, that's great news! I don't really need my speakers to flatter my mixes, I just need them to be brutally honest with me.
I've always been told to just mix on what you are used to. As I recall, when Paul Meany was doing some mastering on my first album, he was using a tiny pair of computer speakers; he said it's what he had always used for that sort of thing. Well, I guess I need all the help I can get. Because mixing on what I'm used to makes for some weird mixes. I've done some mixes with the new JBL's and they are a dream. It was an instant change. I felt like mixing became 100% easier instantly. I went through all of my mixes for the DVD, and started over from scratch. Two days later, I'm nearly done. The best upgrade I've ever made to my studio was getting a good digital converter. The second best, was these monitors.
Thanks for reading.

I've come to believe that your monitors need to fit you like some good jock shorts... Supportive in the areas you need, but flexible enough to play comfortably. I definitely believe that being used to the monitors that you mix on is important, but you need to also like them... I got some Yamahas a little while back, and it made all the difference for me and the room (by bedroom) that I mix in when I'm not at the studio. I think probably because they feel so much like the NS-10s that I first learned on, but the point is I can mix on them, take my mix to some Genelecs or Dynaudios, or Meyers, and most the time it still sounds how I wanted it to sound.
Since I'm not sure where else to ask this, I guess I will here... Think you might ever have time to make a little post dedicated to recording strings? Or maybe some quick tips? I've done it maybe once or twice now, but couldn't capture how I know they should sound... And I love how yours always turn out. Thanks!

Ive always heard that mixing with car-stereo-speakers is ideal, because most normal listeners will listen to the music trough similar speakers. Fun:)
